The 1887 Piedmont Exposition
1887. The first exposition ever held in Piedmont Park, began on October 10th. Lots of construction took place throughout the park of the latest models of industry and invention of the age. The main building was 570 feet long, 126 feet and two stories high. Gas lamps lit the path around Lake Meer. Over 20,000 visitors attended the first day. The New York Governor, David B. Hill and when President Grover Cleveland spoke at the event, over 50,000 people turned out to hear it.
