When Atlanta burned in 1917

If you want to learn Atlanta history, read the old Atlanta newspapers.  This fire was covered for days an included many burned homes in the old fourth ward.
No one knows exactly where the fire started, but it is thought that several fires erupted in the old cotton warehouses.  A southern wind moved the fire northward, and it also swept down Boulevard,  In those days, the fire truck was pulled by horses, and these animals were overcome with smoke. When that occurred, other cities sent in reiinforcements, but it was really too late to save any of the buildings,  The only means left to the firefighters was to dynamite the houses to create a break so that the fire could not jump over.  More than 1900 buildings weredestroyed and over 10,000 people were left homeless.
