The Piedmont Driving Club was founded in 1887 in Atlanta as a private social club with two club houses. Over the years it gained the reputation of being one of the most prestigious private clubs in the South. Originally its membership was for gentlemen only. Members could drive their horses and carries onto the club grounds on Piedmont Avenue. The club used its adjacent grounds as a golf course until 1904 when it sold the land to the City of Atlanta to create Piedmont Park.
