Loew's Grand Theatre

The Loew's Grand Theater, located conspicuously at the corner of Peachtree and Forsyth Streets in downtown Atlanta, was first the DeGive's Grand Opera House. The theater was built in 1893 as DeGive
s Grand Opera House by Laurent DeGrive, Belgain consul and entrepreneur, whose first opera ouse was opened in 1870 at the corner of Marietta and Forsyth Streets.

The famous premier of Gone with the Wind was held here in 1939, with all of the movie stars present.

I personally attended many movies at this tie during the 1940's and 1950's. It was torn down in 1976.

  1. The fire was at the very end of January 1978. I remember seeing it in the newspapers on February 1st, 1978 and also seeing the fire on TV newscasts the night before. A week or two later the entire thing was razed and demolished. (So it was in 1978, not 1976).
